The Earthly Punishment in BaZi: Myths and Real Risks

If you have ever taken an interest in BaZi, you have probably encountered claims that the Earthly Punishment is one of the most unfavorable factors in a destiny chart. It is associated with severe trials in life and serious illness, and is even regarded as a harbinger of tragedy.

It is no surprise that many people who find the Ox, Goat, and Dog combination in their chart begin searching for an answer to the same question:

“How dangerous is this for me personally?”

In reality, far more myths than reliable knowledge have accumulated around the Earthly Punishment.

Over the years, I have analyzed many charts containing this combination. Their owners included prominent politicians, actors, musicians, entrepreneurs, and people from all kinds of professions. Some built successful careers, others faced difficult periods in life, and still others lived quite peaceful lives.

If the same indicator leads to completely different life scenarios, it cannot be treated as a verdict in its own right.

That is why the ShenQi methodology never assesses an individual symbol or combination in isolation from the entire chart. BaZi is a system in which every element acquires meaning only through its relationship with the others.

In this article, we will examine what the Earthly Punishment is, why it has inspired so much fear, how it manifests in practice, and what genuinely matters in its analysis.

The Earthly Punishment is not a diagnosis, a verdict, or a guarantee of negative events. It is one factor in BaZi analysis, and must always be considered in the context of the entire chart and incoming periods.

Why the Earthly Punishment causes so much fear

Perhaps no factor in BaZi raises as many questions as the Earthly Punishment.

This is largely because professional practitioners did indeed observe a connection between an excess of the Earth element and certain serious illnesses. Over time, this information began to circulate without the necessary qualifications, and individual conclusions came to be treated as a universal rule.

The belief gradually emerged that the mere presence of the Earthly Punishment automatically meant a high risk of severe events.

Even among people with the same Ox, Goat, and Dog combination, life scenarios can differ radically. Moreover, many people who experience serious illness have no Earthly Punishment in their chart at all. Conversely, a great many people with this combination live long, fulfilling, and successful lives.

The reason is simple: BaZi never analyzes one indicator separately from the system as a whole.

Professional analysis therefore does not seek out “dangerous combinations.” Its purpose is to understand how the chart’s elements interact, which areas of life they affect, and how their influence changes over time.

This approach makes it possible to move beyond frightening stereotypes and toward a calm, conscious analysis.

What is the Earthly Punishment?

ChatGPT Image Jul 7, 2026, 17_31_31

The Earthly Punishment is a combination of three Earthly Branches:

  • Ox (丑)
  • Goat (未)
  • Dog (戌)

When they come together, the Earth element is significantly strengthened in the chart.

The Earthly Punishment may be natal if all three branches are present in the natal chart, or incoming when the missing branch appears in a luck pillar, year, month, day, or even hour.

The combination does not have to be complete. Two of the three Earthly Branches can already manifest its characteristic qualities, although these are usually much milder. To check whether these branches are present in your own chart, the quickest option is to use the BaZi calculator.

It is important to understand that strengthening Earth is neither inherently good nor bad. Everything depends on the role Earth plays in the particular chart, how useful it is to the person—what BaZi calls the chart’s Useful Element—and which areas of life are affected.

That is why an experienced consultant never draws conclusions solely from the presence of the Earthly Punishment.

For one person, it becomes a source of inner strength and an ability to withstand enormous competition. For another, it manifests through relationships, health, or career. For a third, it remains merely one feature of the chart and has almost no noticeable influence on life.

Everything depends on how this factor is integrated into the chart’s overall structure.

How the Earthly Punishment manifests in a person’s character

When people hear about the Earthly Punishment, most immediately think of potential events or health problems. In practice, however, its influence often begins much earlier—with patterns of thought, behavior, and interaction with others.

Let us recall the qualities of the animals that form this combination.

The Ox symbolizes patience, diligence, and perseverance. It can move toward a goal for a long time without deviating from its chosen path.

The Goat makes a person more sensitive to what is happening around them. It grants inner resilience despite outward gentleness, inspires a search for harmony, and at the same time creates acute sensitivity to injustice.

The Dog strengthens a sense of responsibility, loyalty to one’s principles, and the desire to protect what one believes is right.

Separately, these qualities can hardly be called shortcomings. On the contrary, they help people build careers, assume responsibility, and achieve their goals.

But when these energies combine and become excessive, another side of the Earthly Punishment emerges.

The pursuit of high achievement gradually turns into constant comparison with others. A person finds it difficult to accept other people’s success calmly, acknowledge colleagues’ strengths, or come to terms with someone else getting ahead.

They begin to want to prove their own superiority, defend their position at any cost, or retain control of the situation no matter what.

That is why classical sources call this combination not only the Earthly Punishment, but also the Punishment of Injustice, the Humiliating Punishment, or the Frightening Punishment.

This does not mean that someone is deliberately “punishing” the person. Rather, the behavior pattern itself begins to create situations in which excessive pride, dogmatism, or an inability to recognize other people’s worth gradually leads to conflict and loss.

The most difficult part is that the person often does not notice it.

They believe they are simply pursuing justice, holding themselves and others to high standards, or striving to do better work than everyone else. From the outside, however, this may be perceived as pressure, arrogance, or an unwillingness to compromise.

This creates an interesting paradox: the same quality can become either a source of outstanding achievement or the cause of serious conflict in life. Everything depends on where the person directs their energy—toward constant rivalry with others or toward developing their own abilities.

Why so many people with the Earthly Punishment are successful

If the Earthly Punishment is considered a challenging factor, why does it appear in the charts of prominent politicians, actors, entrepreneurs, and internationally recognized people?

A strong capacity for work, perseverance, the ability to withstand fierce competition, and a desire to be the best often help a person rise very high. At the same time, these same qualities can create strain in relationships, increase inner stress, or lead to difficult situations in life.

The Earthly Punishment cannot be treated solely as an unfavorable factor. It intensifies a particular style of behavior. The results of that style depend on the chart’s entire structure and on how consciously the person uses their strengths.

How it manifests in practice: the example of Catherine Deneuve

To understand better how the Earthly Punishment works, let us consider a real chart.

Image 1

In the chart of French actress Catherine Deneuve, the Earthly Punishment affects several important areas of life at once: the Marriage Palace, career, social realization, and relationships with close associates.

Catherine Deneuve’s professional life was brilliant. She became one of the best-known actresses in French cinema, achieved worldwide recognition, and entered the history of European film.

Her personal life unfolded quite differently. Despite several high-profile relationships, she never entered into an official marriage. The actress later remarked with her characteristic irony:

“The best way to keep a man’s love is not to marry him.”

The chart’s energy manifested even more dramatically through the sphere of relatives. Her elder sister, Françoise Dorléac—a talented actress to whom Catherine was very close—died in a car accident.

This example clearly shows why it is important to understand not the mere presence of the Earthly Punishment, but the particular palaces it affects. It is through these palaces that the chart’s energy most often finds expression in life events.

It is important to emphasize that the Earthly Punishment itself did not cause these events. It was only one element in the overall picture, alongside the structure of the chart, incoming periods, and other interactions.

That is why a professional BaZi analysis always considers the chart as a unified system rather than a collection of isolated signs.

If you would like to see a full analysis of this and other well-known charts, I recommend watching the recording of our live stream on the Earthly Punishment. We examine real examples in detail, show which areas of life the combination affects, and explain why the same indicator can manifest entirely differently for different people.

When the Earthly Punishment requires special attention

The presence of the Earthly Punishment does not by itself mean that major changes must occur in a person’s life. There are, however, situations in which the factor deserves closer analysis—especially when it is not only present in the natal chart, but is also amplified by incoming energies.

For example, two Earthly Branches are already present in a person’s chart and the third arrives in a luck pillar or year. At that moment, the influence of the Earthly Punishment becomes considerably more pronounced. Particular care is warranted during periods when the combination forms on several levels of time at once—for example, in a luck pillar, year, and month simultaneously. This is how it manifested in the forecast for July 2026: the incoming Goat branch of the month completes the Ox and Dog combination in many charts. During such periods, the energy manifests far more strongly and can become a catalyst for important events.

One of the clearest examples of such a convergence, discussed during our live stream, is Princess Diana’s chart. Many people know the tragic end of her life and try to find a single simple explanation for it, but BaZi offers no such explanations: the convergence of several factors played the decisive role. The natal chart created a particular potential, and the energies of the ten-year luck pillar and the incoming period greatly amplified its manifestation. This is precisely why we always analyze not only the birth chart, but also the time in which the person lives.

This does not mean that trouble is inevitable. Such periods instead call for greater awareness, attention to your condition, and a more considered approach to decisions.

How to avoid overlooking such periods

Of course, not everyone is prepared to track independently when combinations like these form in their chart. Doing so requires considering not only the natal chart, but also luck pillars, years, months, days, and even hours.

For example, your chart already contains the Ox and Dog. Then a Goat month arrives, followed by an Ox day and, at a particular moment, a Dog hour. The complete Earthly Punishment forms during that hour.

For an experienced consultant, a combination like this is an immediate reason to pay attention to the quality of the time. But someone who does not practice BaZi professionally will find it quite difficult to track such combinations independently.

That is why we developed the “Date Selection” calendar and the ShenQi Personal Calendar.

All the principal energy interactions have already been calculated in these tools. If an Earthly Punishment forms on a particular day or hour, the system will warn you in advance. For example, the hour’s description will note that the Earthly Punishment is completed during that period.

This does not mean that you should cancel all your plans or fear every such hour.

But if you are planning important negotiations, surgery, the signing of major documents, or another significant event, this information will help you make a better-considered decision and choose a calmer time if necessary.

This is how modern BaZi tools work: they do not frighten, but help you navigate time quality.

Can the influence of the Earthly Punishment be reduced?

This is one of the most common questions asked after consultations and live streams, and the answer may be unexpected.

You cannot cancel the energies of time. But you can change how you experience the period.

If Earth is strengthened in the chart, do not add even more “heaviness” to your life by overloading yourself with work, assuming excessive responsibility, accumulating fatigue, and ignoring your body’s signals.

It is far more useful to direct your attention toward what helps restore inner balance.

First and foremost, take care of your health and do not postpone preventive checkups.

Second, avoid emotional stagnation. The Earthly Punishment often makes a person more dogmatic, so during such periods it is especially important to learn to hear others, avoid turning every disagreement into a struggle to be right, and refrain from making decisions driven by wounded pride.

It is equally important to keep moving.

Walking, travel, physical activity, and a change of scenery all make it easier to navigate periods when the Earth energy becomes especially strong.

And, of course, pay careful attention to the balance between work and rest. The desire to make everything perfect and work at the limit of your abilities is often one of the Earthly Punishment’s main traps.

Sometimes the best decision is not to take one more step forward, but to allow yourself to stop in time and recover.

If it is difficult to assess independently how the Earthly Punishment operates in your own chart, you can obtain a precise picture in a themed BaZi consultation. The analysis is built around your specific question rather than general patterns.

If you would like to explore the subject in greater depth

A single article cannot cover every nuance of the Earthly Punishment.

In practice, its manifestation depends on many factors: the strength of the chart, the usefulness of its elements, the position of the Earthly Branches in different palaces, interactions with other combinations, and the energies of the luck pillars and incoming periods.

That is why the same combination in two different charts can lead to completely different life scenarios.

If you are more interested in how another punishment manifests—for example, the Fire Punishment in BaZi and its influence on the speed of events and mistakes—that is explored in a separate article.

If you would like to learn to analyze such combinations independently and understand when they genuinely require attention and when they are merely one feature of the chart, I recommend the course “Punishments in BaZi”.

In the course, we examine every type of punishment in detail, learn to assess the strength of their influence and identify the areas of life they affect, and—most importantly—analyze them in the context of the entire chart, not as isolated indicators.

Sometimes theory becomes truly clear only when you see how it operates in real lives.

That is why we created the workshop “Can Death Be Avoided?”.

Using two charts as examples, we examine in detail how the natal chart, ten-year luck pillars, and energies of specific periods interact. Two lives that ended tragically.

The workshop helps reveal the most important point: BaZi does not predict inevitable events. It enables us to assess the likelihood of different scenarios, understand the level of risk, and make more conscious decisions.

Conclusion

The Earthly Punishment is one of the most widely discussed factors in BaZi. Unfortunately, it has also accumulated an exceptional number of myths that make people see it as something fatal.

But the more deeply you study charts, the clearer it becomes: the Earthly Punishment is not a verdict, but an indicator that requires understanding.

This echoes a broader question that sooner or later arises for everyone who encounters BaZi: does fate exist at all?. The answer is as calm as it is for the Earthly Punishment: a chart shows potential and probabilities, not a prewritten script.

The Earthly Punishment can manifest in different ways. For one person, it becomes a powerful stimulus for professional growth; for another, a reason to pay closer attention to relationships or health; for a third, merely one feature of the chart with almost no noticeable influence on life.

That is why it is so important not to pull individual indicators out of their overall context. BaZi always considers a person as a complete system in which every interaction acquires meaning only in combination with the chart’s other elements and the energies of time.

This is perhaps the most important conclusion I would like you to take from this article.

There is no need to fear difficult combinations. What matters is learning to understand them.

When understanding replaces anxiety, we gain the opportunity to make better-considered decisions, make better use of favorable periods, and move more calmly through moments that require extra care.

In my view, this is the true value of BaZi: not to predict fate, but to help a person interact consciously with time and the opportunities it opens.

We cannot change the course of time. But we can change how we meet each of its periods. Sometimes that alone is enough to turn a difficult time into a time of sound decisions rather than missed opportunities.
