What Information Is Needed for Calculations?

Getting Started February 11, 2026

For the analysis to be accurate and genuinely useful, we need precise input data.
The ShenQi method relies on the structure of the BaZi chart, which is calculated strictly from the time and place of birth.

1️⃣ Date of Birth

Required: the day, month, and year of birth.

The date determines:

  • the chart structure,

  • the personality element (Day Master),

  • the interaction of the elements,

  • basic life tendencies.

A chart cannot be constructed without an exact date.

2️⃣ Time of Birth

The time should be as precise as possible (hours and minutes).

The time of birth forms the hour pillar of the chart, which governs:

  • deep-seated goals,

  • projects and self-realization,

  • children,

  • inner motivation,

  • strategic periods of life.

Even a difference of 30–60 minutes can change the structure of the chart.

If the time is unknown

There are several options:

  1. Use a known range (for example, «morning» or «around 14–16»).

  2. Construct the chart without an hour pillar (the analysis will be less precise).

  3. In some cases, rectification is possible — refining the birth time based on life events (discussed separately).

It is important to understand:
without an exact time, the analysis will be more general and less detailed.

3️⃣ Place of Birth

We need your city and country of birth.

This is necessary for:

  • calculating local time correctly,

  • accounting for the time zone,

  • converting the time to solar time (if required for accuracy).

Even if the date and hour are correct, the wrong time zone will produce an inaccurate chart.

Why is accuracy important?

BaZi — an analytical system.
It works with:

  • precise changes of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches,

  • the change of hour every two hours,

  • seasonality and month transitions according to the solar calendar.

In some cases, a person born at 23:50 is already assigned to the next day in the BaZi system.
These nuances directly affect:

  • the strength of the chart,

  • favorable elements,

  • the interpretation of periods,

  • recommendations.

❗ A small error in the input data can lead to a different analytical framework.

Quick Scenarios

Scenario 1.
You know the exact time → the calculation will be as precise as possible.

Scenario 2.
You know only the date → an analysis is possible, but without in-depth detail.

Scenario 3.
The time is unknown, but an in-depth analysis is important → the possibility of refining the time is discussed first.

The Key Point

ShenQi does not work with «rough estimates».
The more precise the input data, the more accurate the analysis, recommendations, and forecast.
